How to Make a Lighting Plan?

Choosing the right lighting for your home can sometimes be a difficult task. After all, there is so much choice in types of lighting. A lighting plan can help you gain insight into your lighting needs and the function that a particular lamp must fulfill. With the information from the lighting plan, you can then search specifically for the right lamp. Making a lighting plan is not difficult and you can easily make yourself using the tips below.

STEP 1:

MAKE A MAP OF THE SPACE

As a first step, it is best to make a floor plan of the room in which you want to install the lighting. This works best on graph paper because it is easy to draw to scale, but this is not necessary. On the floor plan, draw the windows, furniture, partition walls, and other things. Do not forget to mention paintings or other places that need to be highlighted on the map. Make sure you have enough space on the paper so that you can add notes later. Do you enjoy working on the computer? Then use a free 3D drawing program.

STEP 2:

DETERMINE THE FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS

Now that the floor plan is ready, you can think carefully about the functional aspects of the lighting. This is the most important step because you consider your light needs and the function of certain places in your home. The functions of a sofa are, for example, reading and watching television. Or at the kitchen worktop: preparing food. A certain place can have multiple functions. Record these functions on the map.

STEP 3:

DESIGNATE LIGHT CIRCLES ON THE LIGHTING PLAN

In step 2 you have thought about the functions of the different places in the room (reading, watching TV, sleeping, cooking, computing, relaxing,). Now you can indicate on the floor plan with light circles where the light should shine. So it is not so much about the precise position of the lamp, but more about the specific areas to be illuminated. The type of lighting you need depends partly on the size of the area to be illuminated. Then give all circles a number.

STEP 4:

DETERMINE THE TYPE OF LIGHTING

Now that it is clear which place you want to illuminate and what function it has, you can start thinking about the type of lighting. Start at light circle number 1 and write down which type of lamp might be best in this position. If it concerns basic lighting, where especially the overview in a room is important, you can opt for a hanging lamp or ceiling lamp. Table lamps or arc lamps are ideal for mood lighting. But there are many other options. Do you find it difficult to determine the right type of lighting? On this page, you will find a lot of information about the different types of lighting.

STEP 5:

COMPLETION OF THE LIGHTING PLAN

You should have brainstormed a lot and you have the necessary information on paper. You know what kind of lamp you need and now you can also indicate its position exactly on the floor plan. The lighting plan is ready. Now you can choose from the many beautiful lamps that are for sale. If you want some inspiration, be sure to take a look at these design lamps.

TIPS FOR MAKING A LIGHTING PLAN

Dimmers can add enormous value to your home and can change the atmosphere in one fell swoop. Dimmers are usually suitable for one type of lamp (for example, only for low-voltage halogen).
Lamps need to be powered and a wire hanging insight can be quite disturbing. Also, think of transformers and power supplies that sometimes have to be placed and hidden separately.
